Your meeting point is just a short distance from the cruise piers - it is a few minute walk from Punta Langosta pier and a few minute taxi ride from Puerta Maya or International pier. Your friendly English speaking guide will get you checked in and show you to the air-conditioned transportation. Group size is kept small and personal.
Please eat light before because you will be eating quite a lot during your culinary excursion. Throughout the day, your guide will be telling you the history, preparation and traditions about the food and drinks you will be having.
It is just a few minutes into town for your first stop. Handmade empanadas! These are a type of savory filled turnover. Typically meats, cheeses and vegetables are used. Please note that all foods and beverages are prepared with and using bottled water. Also, the foods are not typically spicy in the Yucatan. But at each stop, there will be an assortment of salsas that you can top your food with...watch out for the heat level of these!
Every Mayan is very familiar with your next food tasting - cochinita pibil. This is a type of slow roasted, chopped pork served on tortillas. A very unique assortment of spices and ingredients are used to create this dish. You will have a shopping opportunity at the end of the excursion if you want to purchase some of the items, chiles and spices you see today.
A walking tour of the fresh market is next. El Mercado sells a variety of fresh meats, seafoods, vegetables, fruits and other typical household items...tortilla press, hammocks, colorful plastic aprons and lots more. The guide will tell you about the items you pass along the aisles. Unlike most places in Mexico, the locals at the market are usually open to having there photos taken.
Your next stop is just a few blocks away at a neighborhood restaurant for a steaming bowl of Yucatan lime soup - sopa de lima. Beverages will be served at each stop
Fresh from the Caribbean sea...your next stop is a local seafood restaurant. You will be having either fried whole fish or fried shrimp tacos - depending on the day. This is a good chance to sit back, relax and enjoy your vacation.
The next stop on your Cozumel chef foodie excursion is a local bakery. You will have a freshly prepared pastry as dessert!
Your guide will then take you back to the meeting point at a local grocery where they will assist you in finding some of the spices, ingredients and chiles that you sampled today. You will head back to the ship when you are ready with a happy stomach and great memories of your day.
