You can begin your day by taking a brief taxi ride from your cruise ship pier to Playa Uvas, a lovely beach club. Once there you will meet your English speaking excursion guides, who will show you to your sand rail style dune buggy that seats either 2 or 4 people. Please note that these are shared vehicles; you may buy the extra seats if you want the buggy for just yourself, just check the price guide. For your safety, all drivers will need to have a driver's license. Note that these vehicles have a manual transmission and all drivers must have experience driving stick shift.
If there is someone in your group that would like to do the beach club portion and skip the buggy, please see our Cozumel Playa Uvas All Inclusive and Snorkel Beach Day Pass Excursion.
Once you are all set off you'll go behind your guide to the lovely town of El Cedral located inland. There you can see how the locals live. Cedral was the first settlement on Cozumel Island and has a rich history dating back to the Caste War. You will see a small Mayan ruin alongside the first Catholic Church built in Cozumel.
Next you will take off for the center of the island to see the Mayan ruins of San Gervasio. You will learn that this area was built by the Mayan people centuries past to honor the goddess of fertility, IxChel. It was expected that at least once in each Mayan woman's life, she must to make the pilgrimage in small wooden canoes from the mainland to this sacred site to ask for blessings. Eventually, during the Maya reign, a small colony was formed. You will have the opportunity to view these small but lovely ruins and, of course, take photos.
Time for some excitement! This is when you will follow your guide on the off-road portion of your excursion. You will head just down the road to the eastside of the island where you will do a 20 minute drive down a sandy trail that runs along the edge of the beautiful Caribbean before turning around for another fun drive back. Then your guide will lead you to the gravel trails for some fun sliding action. Please be prepared to get dusty, dirty and possibly muddy and wet!
At this time your guide will lead you back to Playa Uvas Beach Club where you will enjoy a guided snorkel tour in the Marine National Park. All the equipment will be provided and your guides will assist you before leading you on a 35 minute tour where you will experience a bit of the second largest barrier reef in the world. There is an amazing life beneath the surface! After you will be pampered with a tasty lunch of fajitas along with two non-alcoholic drinks that is included with your excursion.
This is when it's time to make a choice! You are free to remain at this exclusive beach club and continue to enjoy the amenities such as lounge chairs, a beachside restaurant and bar for any additional food and drink purchases, as well as facilities (including a swimming pool) and shaded areas. Or you can leave early and check out some more sights on the island. Either way, once you are ready you can just take a taxi back to your Cozumel cruise pier at your own leisure and cost.
